Does Fantastic Beasts live up to the hype?

A new gleaming franchise has been born. Like a magical Occamy (a giant flying snake, obviously) hatching slowly from its silver egg, this is going to be huge - then devour everything else at the box office over its next four outings.

Although a loose prequel to the Harry Potter series, Fantastic Beasts is so firmly embedded in the mythology of the Potter universe, it's squarely aimed at its fan-base. And they will undoubtedly be spellbound.
J.K. Rowling has already published the screenplay, so the exact details of the plot are out there. Set in New York in 1926 - 70 years before the events of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - it follows the adventures of a magizoologist called Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne).
He'll go on to write a textbook on the fantastic beasts he's encountered (a book which features in the Harry Potter timeline) - but back in 1926, Newt's accidentally released a suitcase-full of the little blighters and he needs to round them up quick.
